Defiance Defiance Trilogy C J Redwine Books

Defiance is a great start to the Courier’s Daughter series. It follows the POV of Rachel and Logan, two young people who share a love for Rachel’s father and their close second fatherly friend Oliver. For being her first novel, the author did a great job with world building, descriptions, and character development. This book is fairly violent, involving stabbing a, physical assault, burning people, etc. Not too descriptive but what isn’t described is filled in by the readers. No sex, but kissing, discovering attraction, and the worry that a character may have been sexually assaulted ( they weren’t) Language is minimal, maybe a couple d words and h words. I’d say the violence puts this at +13/14.

I think some might argue the main characters fell in love too quickly. If their past history wasn’t mentioned I’d definitely say yes. However, it’s more that the characters finally admitted there was more to their past feelings than they were ready to admit. It also eludes to them being around each other for years before the story starts. As far as the characters, I like Logan’s POV better than Rachel’s. I get trauma , grief, etc, can drive powerful emotions, but she takes it to the next level. As much as one might crave revenge, blindly attacking and killing someone without being certain of their intentions is a bit much, especially since I’m sure her father taught her to know the difference between someone attacking to kill vs disarm. I would have bought into this more if Rachel would have had more of a sorrowful reaction to taking a life for the first time. Something like shock, tears, then anger rather than jumping straight to anger and being unfeeling. Those emotions are fine, it just seemed she skipped a step of shock. She talks about guilt, but I’d rather see it than hear about it. I know her attack against the drunk men earlier in the book tried to justify this, but knowing nothing about the person attacking you vs knowing your potential attacker is just as much a victim as you should add to self restraint, even through personal loss. This is all just opinion so take it as you will. Logan also suffered similar losses including his mother basically being murdered, but you don’t see him running off half cocked. I do like Rachel’s character, just some things didn’t ring true for me in some parts. I’ll definitely keep reading to see how the story ends.

Defiance Defiance Trilogy C J Redwine Books Reviews

SEX none
PROFANITY none
VIOLENCE plenty
Age appropriate for Teens and up.

When Rachel's father doesn't return she's given to Logan as his ward. Though neither like the situation they make do, uniting in their desire to find her father. Meanwhile, Outside the city walls, a monsters waits, making their journey dangerous. However, the monster who ruled the city is even more dangerous and if they survive they may be able to defeat both.

This book is SO well written. Best I've read in a long time. Plot twists continually crank up the tension and the sexual tension between Logan and Rachel adds it's own fuel.

Such a great read! The book deals with real monsters, human monsters and the internal monsters we create. Love it!
This book was a ride! It’s extremely well-paced, quick without leaving out any important details. I am usually really averse to having two characters followed in narrations, but lately I have had so much success with these type of books and this one was in that group. Switching between Logan and Rachel worked really well for this story.
We got to see the developing relationship between the two from both of their perspectives and it was a real treat! Redwine did such a fantastic job with Logan’s inner thoughts. He’s a guy and there is a whole internal conversation he has about Rachel’s breasts in a dress and it’s hilarious! She did not shy away from that and I am so happy because it only made him even more realistic as a character.
The way that Rachel handles grief was perfect! I love when we get to see characters who aren’t strong all the time, that’s not realistic and gives people who read it a very difficult bar to follow.
There were several elements that helped turn this from a traditional post-apocalyptic into a fantasy; the Cursed One, Baalboden, and the Tree People. The Cursed One is a monstrous creature who came out of the ground when humans dug too deep. He is described as a wingless dragon in the book but for some reason in my head he still has wings. I have no idea why that happened, but his description is very clear, but my brain is crazy I guess. Baalboden is the town that they live in and honestly doesn’t feel like anything in our world right now which made it perfect. The people live under the ruthless Commander, who seems to be the only person the Cursed One is afraid of. We only very very briefly get to see the Tree People and I wish we would have actually gotten to see one of their villages. I know that there are two more books, so maybe we will see them then?
Overall this book was great, it was action packed, filled with romance in the face of death and danger, and a monster that destroyed humanity as it was known. I can’t wait to order the other two books and get to read them!
It took me a while to pick up this book, but once I did... WOW! I always struggle to find a new series to start because I hate having to adjust to another author's writing styles. CJ Redwine has mastered the art of writing a compelling book that you can't put down. This story is not like anything I've read, which is so refreshing. I love dystopian, but that genre has been pretty well covered. Then I read this book, and it blossoms into its own new hybrid category. Fic-toipian? One of my pet peeves is reading a novel with poor character development. CJ's characters are dynamic and transformative, her world-building is exceptional, and her plot twists kept me up VERY late. As soon as I finished this book, I cringed at the time, yet began on the second. This is a fantastic book!!!!
